San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport or Aeropuerto Internacional de Luis Muñoz Marín (airport code SJU) is located in Isla Verde, Puerto Rico, 3 miles southeast of the capital of San Juan. The airport is the 12th busiest in Latin America and one of the busiest in the Caribbean. The airport has a Main Terminal with four concourses and a new terminal with one concourse. Major hotels offer shuttle service to and from the airport. Otherwise taxis, rental cars and shared shuttles can transport travelers. Named for Puerto Rico’s first democratically-elected governor, Marín Airport serves as a gateway to the Caribbean islands and sees 8.5 million passengers each year. The airport served as a Caribbean hub for Pan Am, Trans Caribbean Airways, Eastern Air Lines, and a short lived focus city for TWA. It was also the hub of Puerto Rico’s international airline, Prinair from 1966 until 1984, when Prinair went bankrupt. In 1986, American Airlines, along with American Eagle, established a hub in the airport to compete with Eastern Air Lines. American then ended hub operations due to flight capacity cuts and continued to operate a focus city until April 4, 2011. American Eagle service, operated by San Juan-based Executive Airlines with ATR-72 turboprop aircraft, was completely shutdown on April 1, 2013 although American continues to serve the airport.
